The Hub, Waterloo
Mr. Aqeel was the principal in charge of this 500,000 sq.ft development of 600 condominium units located at Columbia and Albert in Waterloo. Catering to the student and young professional demographic, the site is conveniently located near the University of Waterloo campus and David Johnston Technology Park.
The development's overall vision and design philosophy center around creating a pedestrian-friendly, vibrant community catering to the demographic. A village-like feel is envisioned, where a pedestrian promenade starting at Albert Street links the development to Columbia Street, creating a shortcut for pedestrian traffic, making its way to the University and Technology Park to the west.
Two activity nodes along the promenade landscaped open spaces create opportunities for programmable formal and informal spaces for performances, art installations and seasonal activities. The taller buildings are placed along the north to block the winds, and the shorter buildings are placed along the south to allow the sun to penetrate the pedestrian promenade. Commercial retail and amenities spaces open onto the promenade to activate and bring vibrancy to the pedestrian realm.
